To qualify for this training and to become an instructor, you need:

    • A full UK (or in some cases European EU/EEA unrestricted) driving licence which has been held for more than a total of 4 years in the last 6 years prior to entering the Register after qualifying but a foreign, automatic or provisional licence all count toward the 4 years,
    • Not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered into the Register,
    • Be a fit and proper person to have your name entered in the Register.
    • Any convictions or motoring offences still in force will be taken into account when your suitability is assessed (subject to the Rehabilitation Of Offenders Act 1974),
    • Pass the Register qualification exam and register within 12 months of doing so.


After the training is complete, the candidate needs to clear the ADI exam which comprises three main parts:

  • A theory test which can be completed at driving schools preston.
  • An eyesight test and assessment of driving technique.
  • A practical test after completing to driving lessons preston, to assess the quality of instruction and the ability to pass relevant knowledge to pupils.
